Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) founded in 1971, is unique in its kind aiming at the promotion of excellence in graduate and post graduate studies and advanced research in applied sciences, technology, engineering, industry, commerce and social sciences. With only 1,200 students and 250 teachers from all parts of the country, the University works for international excellence. CUSAT offers about 80 programs of study in eight faculties. Already 7,400 students have passed out, 598 of them doctorates. Twenty two departments, eight schools, nine centres, seventeen recognised institutions for research and seven auxiliary units contribute to the curricular and co-curricular activities. By 1995, funded research schemes worth 85 million of rupees have been completed and projects valued at 3.58 million of rupees are in progress, an achievement equaled only by very few Universities in the country.
Cochin University of Science and Technology is the only University in India to be chosen by the Government of Netherlands as counterpart institution for massive assistance (3.5 million Dutch guilders per year) over 12 to 15 years under the M.H.O. programme.
